Ask for help

It's taken me a while (almost a month! 🫣) to share pictures of Davy's bday party, but I really wanted to because I was so thankful about the way it turned out.

I used to (before my injury) look forward to bdays and parties and plan with excitement. Now I dread them, knowing my kids will want a party.

Three days before Davy's bday, I sent out an invitation. A surprising number of friends came, considering it was a weekday. The day before, I asked a whatsapp group of homeschooling (and awesome!) moms I had, if they could help with activities. One of them MADE THE CAKE. An impressively delicious one. Another got materials and organized two activities/crafts (see second and third pics). The others brought food and their presence. I took NOTHING. Not even a bag of chips. Such is my life right now. Davy was overjoyed and had the best party ever.

God has cured me almost completely and I can walk. However, for some reason, I am still tired, on pain medication, unmotivated, sad most of the time and need a lot of help from other people. Maybe permanently. Why would God put me in a place where I am constantly asking for help?

I'm not sure, but maybe to be thankful for all help passed our way and to remind others: we all need to ask for help and be thankful when it comes.

Make safe the way that leads on high

"O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav'nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel."

This is my favorite verse from one of my favorite Christmas carols ever. It us so true and there is SO. MUCH. MISERY in the world. It's not exactly a difference in feelings. It's not a happiness with Emmanuel/Jesus and sad without Him. Because if you follow Jesus the same things that happened to Him will happen to you and life might even be hardER because of how He uses you as an instrument, to be light in darkness, etc (see: St Francis of Assisi prayer). And it's hard to feeeel happy when you go through persecutions and crosses. But it's the MEANING and how you start seeing everything differently that is different.
Misery is how you talk to each other. Family members making fun of and insulting one another. It's how you serve. Or in this case how you don't serve others and victimize yourself and think you have it worse than others. It's how you look, with prying eyes or with envy. It's how you touch. About a million things rush up in my head when I think of the misery people cause through touch: self-harm, or harming others, rape and violence.

Heaven starts on earth and so does hell. Some people are living in a hellscape. The only way out is Emmanuel, born today. To be born in my heart and in yours.

For the second time we spent Xmas Eve just the eight of us. It was calm and we didn't open any presents which helped focus on the other, more important parts of Christmas. We went to mass and then tried my best to have a "Bethlehem dinner"(pita bread, store-bought hummus, hard-boiled eggs, olives, etc). I was going to make chicken kebabs, but didn't get to it. I really wanted to set up a table on the floor, like a mattress, and sit on pillows on the floor, to be more middle eastern and something different for us, but the babies 👶 👶 couldn't understand it wasn't for jumping on.

We made this White Christmas Sparkle Cake 🎂 and I put the baby Jesus that was missing from our nativity scene. We sang happy birthday to baby Jesus and then sang carols around Him and a candle. And yes, Adelaide has ice on her head because Dimas hit her with a statue if Our Lady. He probably deserves coal in his stocking for the siblings he inflicts pain on everyday... but he might get presents instead. 🎁 😊
Merry Christmas!

A ÚNICA sáida é Imanuel, nascido hoje. Deixar nascer no meu coração e no teu.

Feliz Natal!

Thankful

A year ago, we celebrated thanksgiving with our american friends and I was in a wheelchair and couldn't stand up at all.

Last night, they flew in (we hadn't seen each other in a year!) and I'm walking. Look at you! they said. My heart was filled with gratitude last year for having more years on this earth with such an amazing husband, kids, friends and family to shower me with love. And this year, believe it or not, my heart is FULLER.

Holywins

Happy All Saints Day!

Love,

St Zelie and St Louis Martin (me & Daniel), their daughter St Therese of Lisieux (Lettie), St Lucy with eyeballs on platter (Adelaide), St George and the dragon (Davy and Tommy), OL Guadalupe and St Juan Diego (Rosie and Dimas, who wouldn't wear his sombrero and insisted on  sword!).

Davy said, "you guys are the only parents dressed up." To which I answered, "because we're the coolest parents!". It is so nice to have things we enjoy so much together, especially counter cultural things like this one. We have been dressing up for many years now and last year I was sad because I was incapable of doing anything to mark the day with. Today totally made up for it.

Life doesn't have a pause button

October has been a good month and I feel more at peace and as if things have calmed down. Decision making is the most difficult part of life... don't you think?
We have decided to keep our oldest three kids at their schools, even though financial aid was cancelled this year due to lack of funds. But we love their schools and especially the community of families, which was so important to us after my injury. Because of this, I am teaching a few religion classes at Adelaide's school.
Our youngest three are still at home with our lovely babysitter/nanny. Above is a picture of Lettie reading a book upside down. They go to the park, play together and she reads books to them all day. What better education could you want? Also, I am usually around and then I take over when she leaves.

There is also a picture of Daniel and Lettie and I at the Jaime Oliver restaurant. We were able to go on that special date, with Lettie tagging along, lucky her. She tried everything and interestingly enough prefers sparkling water to regular water!

There are also pictures of the baby shower we threw for Adelaide's godmother and my friend from college. (The baby's name is José) It was a happy day for everyone. Our group of friends from college doesn't get together often but we love each other a lot. We all thought it was funny how Rosie put a ball in her shirt, pretending to be pregnant.

As for my physical recovery, I have been really improving during the last two months, especially with the help of clinical pilates. Last Thursday I made huge progress with "funcional neurology" or "P-DTR". You can look up @mikelperez.tv on instagram, he comes to Lisbon to give courses and do this therapy often. Since that appointment I had on Thursday, I have been walking without my walking stick! I still lack feeling, so I'm still thinking about a solution for driving, and I still got some "balance homework" to keep practicing at home.

I'm trying to keep taking care of myself, doing physical therapy, taking care of my kids and the house as best I can, teaching some classes and worrying about finances just like everyone else! Because just like I couldn't put my kids on hold when I had my injury a year ago, I still can't put my life on hold while I finish fully recovering. Life doesn't have a pause button! You just push on through, holding on to what's important.

Podes procurar @mikelperez.tv no instagram.

Rosie turns FOUR

F*O*U*R

years of delighting in Rosie's innocence, calm, motherliness, joy and giggles (and really intense kicking-on-the-floor-tantrums of course!)

Here's to her future health, happiness and vocation!

Back to school feast

We have been doing a back to school feast à la nieniedialogues.com since 2018. You can look up past pictures on here. The idea is to have a special meal, in our case dessert, together and wear crowns. I added the German tradition of "schultutes", cones filled with school supplies, and a list of our favorite things.
This year, it almost didn't happen. But it did! A few weeks late, we forgot the crowns, the feast was a chocolate bar each (so... a tummy ache) and the schultute had only a tiny present each.
It's nice to have their pictures each year to register how much they change! Even their favorite colors change (their poster board is their favorite color.)
I'm barely able to keep up any of the traditions we've started, but the ones we repeat they love.

Joy through it all

Leticia is one! We can't imagine life without her. A child is not only a blessing to her family, but to neighbors, friends, random people on the street, etc. She makes everyone smile and ooh and aah. What if we had stopped having kids at Adelaide and Davy, like everyone thought appropriate? Then we wouldn't have Tommy! (And so on down the line) Adelaide and Davy (and the others) love Tommy so much! When he stayed behind at his grandparents' house in the north, they said they missed him and were thankful for him every day at dinner (we usually say something we're thankful for). Once I took him to get stitches on his eyebrow and when I went to get them I was surprised by the genuine concern and tears in Davy's eyes. "How is he?" he asked before I could say hello.

Just like Dimas is unlike any kid we've ever had (in terms of energy and destruction!), Lettie is unlike any other kid we've ever had. She's calm and cuddly and touches things ever so gently. She doesn't like pacifiers and a lot of other things (especially food!) that she shakes her head at. She is opinionated! She still tilts her head a little to the left and could probably still benefit from physical therapy. She is our only child that was born with so much hair. I love her rockstar bangs that are always in her eyes. She's my little Yorkshire Terrier. Every person is so unique.

Our kind neighbors made their famous lasagna and we just had family members and godparents over. It was calm and relaxed, just like Leticia! And still, Davy said it was one of his favorite parties ever. Children are simple.

We are still going through some stressful decisions and still appreciate your prayers. It is interesting to not how now I have neurological alterations and might have my whole life. Emotions affect me on a much more physical level. There were a few nights I didn't sleep so well this week and was crying here and there and I felt it during the day. Every now and then I would feel dizzy and have blurred vision, but just for a few seconds. Sometimes I also felt like I was hearing things underwater.

Life is never smooth sailing. It's full of beautiful and awful moments, all interspersed. I'm holding on to the beautiful and to our one-year-old "laetitia" (joy).

"In laetitia nulla dies sine cruce" (in joy, may no day pass without a cross" - St. Josemaria

Happy feast day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross ;)

É a minha cadelinha yorkshire.

Josemaria

Feliz festa da Exaltação da Santa Cruz ;)

Relationships, the beautiful, pursuing God

On Monday, Davy turned seven and he had a good day. He got lots of the presents he wanted (a ninja costume, "science" things: a microscope, a magnifying glass and some experiments) and I was able to get some good deals on used things (site OLX). A lot of nice people came to his "water gun" themed party and it was fun to see the kids playing in such a free, natural space (where we used to go to our playgroup). I didn't do much, except make the cake, but after these eventful days, I come home exhausted, with strange electric shock pains in my legs and have to take extra medication. The next day I am tired too.

I went to a conference by Javier Vidal Quadras, the best conference I've ever been to!, and he explained how there are different feelings. We should disregard the physical ones. I have experienced that, even before my injury, but more intensely afterwards. If I waited to do things when I felt "good", I would never do anything! Instead, I push through the doubt, the pain, the tiredness for the relationships with people, the beautiful, pursuing God. Davy's birthday was worth it, even though it was windy and cold, and I was tired the next day.

Last Saturday I had our cook (now that I've started cooking again) teach me and a couple of friends a few recipes. I love learning new recipes and both sessions were amazing. Stay tuned for our male chefs next! ;)

In terms of recovery, I am walking better and feeling stronger each week. But still far from "doing things" everyday. Today I did a second lymphatic drainage. I'm not sure if it helped contribute to my calf muscles starting to work last week or not, but I think it might help.

No dia seguinte estou especialmente cansada.

O aniversário do David valeu a pena, embora tivesse frio e vento, e embora esteja cansada hoje.
