Always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

2 Corinthians 4:6-11

A friend sent me a message saying she thought of me when she heard this second reading from mass today (here Corpus Christi was already celebrated Thursday, so it's not those readings). I couldn't believe it because it's one of favorite readings!

You haven't heard from me much since January because suddenly my wound on my heel got worse. It's almost better now and, long story short, I'm still on crutches and have been living like a hermit since April 4th because it's tiring to get around on crutches. Plus, I'm supposed to rest it. Magically, my ocassional pain that I had to take SOS/extra pain meds to manage disappeared. But last week I started ten days of hyperbaric treatment (two hours each), which is supposed to decrease my pain, but it actually increased it! I've been taking the extras almost every day. The doctors say it will most likely get worse before it gets better. This week I have five days straight of the treatment (in addition to getting my bandage remade at the hospital) and, to make matters worse, I have to get an ear exam done tomorrow because they hurt and are hard to "pop" when they turn on the pressure. And I'm also taking antihistamines to see if it gets better.

So I feel afflicted, perplexed, persecuted amd struck down, but I know God is with me. How? Again, mostly through people. I had a uncontrollable crying atrack before showing up empty-handed and late (as usual now) to our godson's party on Thurs and they cheered me up, doted on me, hugged me, etc so much that I left with my heart full. When I got home, I sat paralyzed in front of my messy dinner table, feeling the despair come on again, when.... my friend from college rang the doorbell! A friend at the party had told her about me crying and she rushed over to my house. Let me tell you: I don't remember ever going to any friend's house just to comfort them, and I don't deserve such wonderful moments of grace given ny His instruments in my life. Of course, she listened to me, I shed some tears, she set the table, we rejoiced in her presence and had icecream for dessert. We rehearsed our recital songs for her and she sang a fado song for us. I tried to capture Lettie and Rosie's entranced looks as they listened to her sing in the following pic.

The first pics are at Davy's rugby game on Sat. I only went because he reeeeeeally wanted me to go, but it was great. I took the picture holding Dimas in my lap because I love being able to slowly go back to the most important work ever (other than being a wife): taking care of my kids' needs. More important than meals, hygiene, schooling, etc, is physical touch. Watching them play, sitting in my lap, leaning on me, massage, hugs. I love how the follow me around and if I sit they plop into my lap.

And of course today, we had the best recital ever with our lovely violin teacher. I said in a little soeech I made at the end: eight years ago I dreamed of having a family band and today was the first day it really happened. I played the piano and my oldest three played their violins. I will post photos and videos tomorrow!

Sleepy days, pain days, repeat

This is Dimas on his birthday when he turned 3 in February. We sent out invitations the day before, for a party, but then sent out messages cancelling it. I was too tired and had a bandage again on my heel. Instead, we went to McDonalds for lunch and for a walk around the park area with his godparents and he was THRILLED. You can tell by his smile. His godmother, who thinks of BEAUTIFUL DETAILS (she's an artist), brought a small red velvet cake with a sparkler candle. He had never seen a sparkler candle and he was also THRILLED. The cake inspired me to make red velvet cake at home. Since then, I've made it twice, and I'll have to share about that in another post.

I haven't sent out news for a while (or written articles!) because sleepiness and discouragement have taken over my life. Sleepiness because I realized the pain medication I am taken is very strong and in high doses. I switched "pain center" from one hospital to another (now I am going to Santa Maria for that also) and went to an appointment with the anesthesiologist last week. She is AMAZING and the hour and a half she spend just talking to us and looking at my feet a bit was AMAZING. She says she is used to seeing people on pain medication, but was a little shocked to see my high doses. She wants to help me lower them. There is a pain treatment I can do for my feet, but I have to cure my ulcer first.

That's another thing: the ulcer. I stepped on something without feeling it in December. It infected under the skin, they cut off the skin on top (diagnosed a pressure ulcer), put on a bandage for a few weeks and then took it off. I accidentally stepped on a tiny grain of sand or dirt, on the thin skin, and made a second ulcer in February. Same deal: bandage for a week or two, sent home with hopes of full and easy recovery. Two weeks ago the wound got INFECTED. I still have a bandage on my foot (it's on my heel). I have an appointment on Thursday and I hope to take it off then. It doesn't hurt because I don't have feeling in my heels. That's why I got the wound in the first place. They cut without local anesthesia and I don't feel it.

I categorize my days as a sleepy day or as a pain day. Saturday I woke up and felt the sharp, serrating pain on my toes on my right foot I've had off and on since January 2023. I thought: oh gosh, here come the pain days. It went away this afternoon. Sometimes it stays longer, it depends. I try to tolerate it during the day, unless it's very bad and then I take one of my SOS pills. But I try to reserve them for nighttime, because I should only take a maximum of three and I usually need the three to be able to sleep at night. My new pain doctor (the anesthesiologist I had an appointment with last week at the pain center) prescribed morphine in a pill for SOS because that is the next step up after what I'm taking right now and only works at the second or third pill. She said I shouldn't be taking so many SOS pills days in a row. So please pray my ulcer gets better soon and we can try the topical foot treatment.

Other days are sleepy days. I'm fine during the morning and it's all downhill after lunch. I've fallen asleep while driving and hit the curb (I know it's dangerous! I try to avoid it when I'm sleepy!). I've fallen asleep while leaning on my desk during a class I teach at my daughter's school. I've fallen asleep (I'm talking seconds or minutes by the way) while teaching online English classes. I've since had to cancel those, because I cannot take care of myself (which I need A LOT more maintenance for now), my kids and my house, much less anything past that. This is the biggest sacrifice for me of all: seeing my day slide by because I took a nap in the middle of it. People reminding me I should've done something months ago and I just can't get to my to-do list. And what hurts the most: not doing fun things with my kids. Today we sang a song to memorize the 50 states with, which we used to do some activities with years ago. I asked Adelaide and Davy, do you remember when I used to be a fun mom, and do more activities with you guys? I was hoping they would say they didn't remember, and that I am fun now, or something along the lines of that doesn't matter to us. Instead, they got really sad and said, yes, can you please try to do something with us again sometime? We still have the boxes with craft materials in the office, they said.

Some of you didn't catch it in the last blog update: I am able to drive! I have been driving for about a month and it was felt GREAT to be able to take my kids somewhere and spend time with them out of the house for once.

Ainda tenho penso no pé (a ferida é no calcanhar).

Ainda temos materiais no escritório...

Jesus falls for the first time

Why haven't I written and given an update in so long? Well, I'm always S.O. T.I.R.E.D. I can't find the time or the will power.
One day, I helped the older kids get out the door for school and there was about an hour until the babysitter got here and I fell asleep on the couch. When she rang the doorbell, I got up to talk to her, before changing from my pyjamas. She couldn't stop giggling and said, you know you've been drawn on, right? I hadn't noticed. (See pictures above)
Such is life when when you can fall into deep sleep in a minute and not feel your one-year-old draw on you. I'm not sure if the sleepiness comes from the pain medication I take or from the injury.
I'm not sure why God is allowing me to have increased difficulty in the simple tasks I love to do and I live to do, like organize my house and cook meals. Like take my kids anywhere.

I have started driving!! Woo hoo! Two weeks ago. I feel enough in my feet and have enough strength to work the pedals. I took my kids to two friend's houses this week because the oldest were off school. It felt like old times. I was getting back to work. Back to normal.
Except the sleepiness, also while driving, anytime after lunch.
And after 5 pm I'm done for. I just complain to the kids, lose my temper and going from the kitchen to the living room seems like mountain climbing.
Why would God allow taking away my energy, making us suffer financially and making it so much harder to take care of the six beautiful children He gave me?
I was able to listen to Bishop Barron's Stations of the Cross today on spotify (I highly recommend, of course). I especially liked the meditation about Jesus's first fall with the cross. A parishioner asked him once, why would God allow my two granddaughters, 5 and 7 years old, to suffer from terminal illnesses in which they first become blind and then die? Bishop Barron told the man he didn't have an easy answer for him, but he knew that just asking the question was sacred.
Lately I have been all out of answers. All out of time to read and write, which is what I would most like to do. But I'm asking these questions. I hope you are too.
When I was able to take them out with their bikes. Once.

C.A.N.S.A.D.A.
Comecei a conduzir!! Woo hoo!
Ultimamente faltam-me as respostas.

My feet and my hands and my feet and my hands and my feet.....

Mom-daughter coffee date (they went to see my pilates!)
This last one at the park with a babysitter

The week before Christmas we had a wonderful time getting extra books read and extra cuddles from our grandmother from the Azores (my mom), but I also got diagnosed with a pressure ulcer on my heel. I guess you always get a mix of good and bad in life? Like it says in one of my favorite songs (called "The Hope Machine" by the Okee Dokee Brothers): Open up the windows of your heart, let in the sunshine, let in the rain. Even so, I'm having a hard time persevering and not feeling disappointed. Today Daniel and I were talking about how good it was we had our big anniversary party in June. We thought my recovery was over or almost over. Since then, three things shooken, the last one being this diagnosis, and we would never have gotten to it again.

On the Monday of last week, we noticed little drops of blood all over the house and I was checking all the kids, wondering who was bleeding. Tuesday morning I realized it was my heel and I couldn't feel it. I showed it to my physical therapist at the hospital that morning and she thought it was dry, cracked skin and said for me to moisturize intensely, which I started doing. But then it started to get more and more sore when I would step on it. And it started to get red and itch a little further up.

Cut a looong story short: a very kind friend of mine thought of a nurse friend of hers with a phD in wounds. This nurse came (on Christmas day! so nice!), confirmed it is definitely a pressure ulcer and explained the foot isn't made to support all of the body's weight on the heels. There was pus under a big layer of very hard, dead skin. It was heading up my leg in a red line because it had no other way to get out. She cut that dead skin off, drained the pus and the wound will now heal itself. I was super lucky, as usual (God is in the details, He provides for everything), to be seen by a real expert who doesn't usually live in Lisbon, but was visiting for Christmas. And also for us to have caught it at a good time, easy to treat. I probably stepped on something at home and didn't feel it. It perforated the skin and caused an infection. It was almost a good thing I got the wound so that I would notice the ulcer.

In case you're interested, here is the before picture, and the after picture when she cut off the dead skin:

before
now

Unfortunately this means I have to walk as little as possible. I am getting around in an office chair at home (easier to maneuver than wheel chair) and a wheel chair outside. Unfortunately I can't push my own wheelchair because I was diagnosed with carpel tunnel syndrome three months after my injury last year. (from pushing my chair)

When this injury happened 15 months ago, I thought ok, a couple of months and I'll get back to life as normal. Then time passed and I thought, ok a year. Life as normal would be being able to take care of my kids by myself, without a babysitter, and be able take them outside everyday for some outdoors. To be able to take better care of our house so it's not always a ginormous mess. To not have to hire so much help and call so many taxis. However, now I am even more limited as I should avoid standing up and I should lay down and elevate my legs a little everyday. To go anywhere I have to rely on someone to push me.

Have I had pain? A lot of people ask. Thank you for your concern. My pain is under control because of the pain medication I take morning and evening. The doctor recently increased the doses. I usually don't feel pain, just sleepiness or slight discomfort/tingling/sensitivity in my feet. However, every now and then, since January, I've had a more localized pain on the toes of my right foot. That pain is very intense and I have gotten two "interventions" to see if it improves long term. I was super happy because I hadn't had it since the last week of October. But no, my old friend came back last Saturday. At least now I have a pain medication I take as an extra "SOS" that actually works.

Why is life so not how we want it to be? How is this extra-long recovery, difficult for the whole family, good for anything? My wise friend said, "ah but that is hope: working without seeing the results, but knowing they are happening." I'm not the only person sick or wounded in the world. Quite the contrary. Everyone gets the opportunity to take care of the sick or to be taken care of while sick or both. That's probably why people are OBSESSED with well-being and health and diets: because being sick and dying are scary. This Christmas, as I suffered with these physical maladies and also with the emotional frustration of limitations, I thought of how silly people are to worry and put SO MUCH time and effort into fine dining, mindless entertainment and travel. These things can be used for good, but if ordered to their purpose. Most people are anaesthesized by screens and the frantic search for pleasure. I started thinking up a third book I want to write called something along the line of "Vanity of Vanities" or "Almost everyone lives an illusion". What do you think? Pray for me to have time, because now I just sleep, or move at an even slower pace around the house...!

I wish you the continuation of a happy (twelve days of) Christmas.

Perfurou a pele e causou infeção.

O médico recentemente aumentou as doses.

Make safe the way that leads on high

"O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav'nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel."

This is my favorite verse from one of my favorite Christmas carols ever. It us so true and there is SO. MUCH. MISERY in the world. It's not exactly a difference in feelings. It's not a happiness with Emmanuel/Jesus and sad without Him. Because if you follow Jesus the same things that happened to Him will happen to you and life might even be hardER because of how He uses you as an instrument, to be light in darkness, etc (see: St Francis of Assisi prayer). And it's hard to feeeel happy when you go through persecutions and crosses. But it's the MEANING and how you start seeing everything differently that is different.
Misery is how you talk to each other. Family members making fun of and insulting one another. It's how you serve. Or in this case how you don't serve others and victimize yourself and think you have it worse than others. It's how you look, with prying eyes or with envy. It's how you touch. About a million things rush up in my head when I think of the misery people cause through touch: self-harm, or harming others, rape and violence.

Heaven starts on earth and so does hell. Some people are living in a hellscape. The only way out is Emmanuel, born today. To be born in my heart and in yours.

For the second time we spent Xmas Eve just the eight of us. It was calm and we didn't open any presents which helped focus on the other, more important parts of Christmas. We went to mass and then tried my best to have a "Bethlehem dinner"(pita bread, store-bought hummus, hard-boiled eggs, olives, etc). I was going to make chicken kebabs, but didn't get to it. I really wanted to set up a table on the floor, like a mattress, and sit on pillows on the floor, to be more middle eastern and something different for us, but the babies 👶 👶 couldn't understand it wasn't for jumping on.

We made this White Christmas Sparkle Cake 🎂 and I put the baby Jesus that was missing from our nativity scene. We sang happy birthday to baby Jesus and then sang carols around Him and a candle. And yes, Adelaide has ice on her head because Dimas hit her with a statue if Our Lady. He probably deserves coal in his stocking for the siblings he inflicts pain on everyday... but he might get presents instead. 🎁 😊
Merry Christmas!

A ÚNICA sáida é Imanuel, nascido hoje. Deixar nascer no meu coração e no teu.

Feliz Natal!

Life knocks you down

Life seems like it has been especially hard lately. Maybe for everyone? It knocks me down, and I am trying to get up each day. I love this Rocky quote about this here:
I haven't had the pain in my foot in a month and a half. I have, however, had constant sleepiness. I woke up yesterday with the help of Daniel literally pulling me out, like he always does. I slept a little on the taxi to the hospital. I yawned during the physical therapy there and the therapist asked, "Are you sleepy? Let's do some exercises to wake you up." I also slept ten minutes on the couch when I got home at the end of the day with the three littles fighting on my lap and every now and then I would yell an incoherent, "Dimas, don't hit!" Sometimes just ten minutes helps me. Today I laid down in the office floor between two online classes and slept a 30 min power nap!
I prefer the sleepiness over the pain, but it's a close call. I feel sorry for all other people who suffer from chronic pain and have to pick pain or sleepiness! It's hard to push through when you are constantly tired. I sometimes even sleep directly after drinking coffee.

We went to the Science Museum two weekends in a row. It was the first time we went alone somewhere with the kids and it felt good to be able to spend that time with my kids. They appreciated it. It was relaxing. It felt like when we went to the United States years ago and were sightseeing. I was also very tired, of course, when I got home, but I was able to recover well.
I have two articles in my head I would love to find time to write and two books I would also love to find time to write. I would like to read more and practice more piano. I would like to organize the house and bake cookies. I would like to read to my kids and play board games with them. I am slowly letting go and accepting I can barely do anything with my day. Before the injury, I had little time and money for everything I wanted, but now I have a million times less time and money for everything I want/need. Trying to figure out what to do long-term. I guess everyone could use a little more time and money, right? I just never imagined my recovery would take more than a year. I thought I would be back to "normal life" by now.
A friend and now English student ;) told me the other day she felt like she was failing. I couldn't believe it. She is such an amazing and interesting person. I would love to know all about her past. She has enchanting kids and is an inspiration for me. I told her: sometimes the more we fail in the world's eyes, the more we are succeeding in God's! At least for me: I'm sicker, more tired, more overwhelmed, but I know God is using this all to paint a bigger picture. Speaking of which, the first reading from Isaiah in mass today REALLY spoke to me. And a verse from the psalm.

"He gives strength to the fainting;
for the weak he makes vigor abound.
Though young men faint and grow weary,
and youths stagger and fall,
They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength,
they will soar as with eagles' wings;
They will run and not grow weary,
walk and not grow faint." Isaiah 40

"He pardons all your iniquities,
he heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
he crowns you with kindness and compassion." Psalm 103

PS thank to you all friends who have sent us GIFTS. WOW. And words of encouragement. And prayers!

A vida parece especialmente difícil ultimamente. Talvez para todos? Empurra-me e caio, mas tento-me levantar todos os dias. Gosto imenso desta citação do Rocky neste video clip.
Bocejei durante a fisioterpeia e a terapeuta perguntou: "Tens sono?

Isaias 40

"Ele perdoa todos os teus pecados
e cura as tuas enfermidades;
salva da morte a tua vida
e coroa-te de graça e misericórdia." Salmo 103

PS Obrigada do fundo do coração a quem nos deu PRENDAS. UAU. E obrigada pelas palavras de encorajamento e pelas orações.

Life doesn't have a pause button

October has been a good month and I feel more at peace and as if things have calmed down. Decision making is the most difficult part of life... don't you think?
We have decided to keep our oldest three kids at their schools, even though financial aid was cancelled this year due to lack of funds. But we love their schools and especially the community of families, which was so important to us after my injury. Because of this, I am teaching a few religion classes at Adelaide's school.
Our youngest three are still at home with our lovely babysitter/nanny. Above is a picture of Lettie reading a book upside down. They go to the park, play together and she reads books to them all day. What better education could you want? Also, I am usually around and then I take over when she leaves.

There is also a picture of Daniel and Lettie and I at the Jaime Oliver restaurant. We were able to go on that special date, with Lettie tagging along, lucky her. She tried everything and interestingly enough prefers sparkling water to regular water!

There are also pictures of the baby shower we threw for Adelaide's godmother and my friend from college. (The baby's name is José) It was a happy day for everyone. Our group of friends from college doesn't get together often but we love each other a lot. We all thought it was funny how Rosie put a ball in her shirt, pretending to be pregnant.

As for my physical recovery, I have been really improving during the last two months, especially with the help of clinical pilates. Last Thursday I made huge progress with "funcional neurology" or "P-DTR". You can look up @mikelperez.tv on instagram, he comes to Lisbon to give courses and do this therapy often. Since that appointment I had on Thursday, I have been walking without my walking stick! I still lack feeling, so I'm still thinking about a solution for driving, and I still got some "balance homework" to keep practicing at home.

I'm trying to keep taking care of myself, doing physical therapy, taking care of my kids and the house as best I can, teaching some classes and worrying about finances just like everyone else! Because just like I couldn't put my kids on hold when I had my injury a year ago, I still can't put my life on hold while I finish fully recovering. Life doesn't have a pause button! You just push on through, holding on to what's important.

Podes procurar @mikelperez.tv no instagram.

Relationships, the beautiful, pursuing God

On Monday, Davy turned seven and he had a good day. He got lots of the presents he wanted (a ninja costume, "science" things: a microscope, a magnifying glass and some experiments) and I was able to get some good deals on used things (site OLX). A lot of nice people came to his "water gun" themed party and it was fun to see the kids playing in such a free, natural space (where we used to go to our playgroup). I didn't do much, except make the cake, but after these eventful days, I come home exhausted, with strange electric shock pains in my legs and have to take extra medication. The next day I am tired too.

I went to a conference by Javier Vidal Quadras, the best conference I've ever been to!, and he explained how there are different feelings. We should disregard the physical ones. I have experienced that, even before my injury, but more intensely afterwards. If I waited to do things when I felt "good", I would never do anything! Instead, I push through the doubt, the pain, the tiredness for the relationships with people, the beautiful, pursuing God. Davy's birthday was worth it, even though it was windy and cold, and I was tired the next day.

Last Saturday I had our cook (now that I've started cooking again) teach me and a couple of friends a few recipes. I love learning new recipes and both sessions were amazing. Stay tuned for our male chefs next! ;)

In terms of recovery, I am walking better and feeling stronger each week. But still far from "doing things" everyday. Today I did a second lymphatic drainage. I'm not sure if it helped contribute to my calf muscles starting to work last week or not, but I think it might help.

No dia seguinte estou especialmente cansada.

O aniversário do David valeu a pena, embora tivesse frio e vento, e embora esteja cansada hoje.
